Google Updates Budget Pacing for Ad Scheduling: What Advertisers Need to Know

Peter A. Liefer II | Posted: May 5th, 2026

Google has rolled out a change to how budget pacing works in campaigns that use ad scheduling, which could affect how some advertisers spend throughout the month.

If your campaigns only run on selected days or hours, you may notice a difference. Google is not changing your schedule, but it may try to spend more of your budget during the times your ads are eligible to run.

That means some advertisers could start seeing budgets deplete faster than they are used to, even though their schedules are exactly the same.

Google Updates Budget Pacing for Ad Scheduling

What’s Changing?

Until now, campaigns with limited schedules have often spent less over the course of a month simply because they were not eligible to run all the time. Fewer hours in the market meant fewer chances to enter auctions, which naturally held spending back.

With this update, Google changes that behavior. Campaigns no longer underspend because of limited schedules, and the system spends more during the hours and days when the campaign is active.

The schedule is still the same. What will change is how Google allocates its budgets within those windows.

What’s Staying the Same?

A few important things have not changed:

  • You Still Control Your Daily Budget

Advertisers are still setting their own budgets.

  • Google’s Billing Limits Still Apply

Standard billing protections still apply, and the update leaves Google’s billing rules untouched.

  • Ads Will Only Run During Scheduled Times

Campaigns will run only during the days and hours set in the ad schedule. The update changes how Google spends inside those windows, not when ads can appear.

These changes will follow once the update reaches the account:

  • More Aggressive Spend During Active Hours

Google may put more pressure on the hours your ads are eligible to run, which can lead to higher spend during those windows.

  • Faster Pacing Toward Your Monthly Cap

Campaigns with limited schedules may spend their budgets faster than before, even though the schedule itself has not changed.

Simply put, although the schedule remains the same, Google now allocates a larger share of the monthly budget to each active day.

Why Is This Update So Important?

Many advertisers use ad scheduling to stay selective about when Google spends the budget. In the past, a limited schedule also kept monthly totals lower by default.

This update may change that pattern.

Since Google may use more of the monthly budget during the scheduled hours, some accounts will need a review of the daily budget, the bid strategy, or the schedule itself.

Final Thoughts

The main takeaway from this update is that campaigns with limited schedules may spend more of their monthly budget than before, even though the schedule itself is the same.

This update does not change when your campaigns can run. Rather, it changes how aggressively Google spends your budget on those scheduled windows.

For advertisers whose conversions occur during scheduled hours, the extra spend works in their favor. For advertisers who set tight schedules to cap monthly costs, a lower daily budget may offset the higher spend. These are just some of our recommendations; a thorough review of the account may yield more.

If you want a second set of eyes on your campaigns, PrimeView can review them and recommend the next step.
